Review of Superman II (1980) by Sean N — 07 Nov 2010

In terms of sequels, comic book superhero movies do pretty good, I think, when it comes to the first sequel. The Spider-Man, Batman, and X-Men franchies have all done pretty well with the second film in their franchise. Superman II is no exception. It isn't as good as the original, but what do you expect considering how amazing the original film was. The sometimes slapstick humor and stupid moments that the Nostalgia Critic pointed out are the only things that keep this film from being a perfect film.

Superman (Christopher Reeve) has become the hero of Earth. However, trouble starts when Superman (under the disguise of Clark Kent) and his love interest Lois Lane (Margot Kidder). Lois, who has a crush on Superman, starts to figure Clark's secret identity. But, as Superman is forced to decide whether or not to relinquish his powers, Earth is attacked by 3 Kryptonian supervillains who were imprisoned by Superman's father in the Phantom Zone but were released when Superman launched a hydrogen bomb into space.

In all, Christopher Reeve again does a good job as Superman and the rest of the cast is good too. There are stupid moments like I said, like when that kid is hanging off the railing of Niagara Falls or the memory kiss that Superman uses at the end (I know that was in the comics, but you wonder why he doesn't use that as a real weapon against the supervillains (it may be awkward, but it could most likely work).

So, Superman II isn't the first film, but does it have to? On its own, its a good sequel.
