Review of Superman II (1980) by Cliff M — 10 Sep 2016
Strong sequel to the original Superman film was sadly marred by producer interference and the original director, Richard Donner, being removed from the film. Donner's cut was much more serious and was minus the the many comic gags inserted by his replacement director, Richard Lester.
The story is a good one, which three super villains from Krypton coming to earth and seeking revenge upon the son of the man who imprisoned them, Superman's father. All the main actors returned for this film, but the additional of Terrance Stamp as General Zod is a strong addition to the original cast and gives the film some real menace.
But like I said before, it's the annoying and unnecessary bits of comedy that bring down what would otherwise have been a film equal if not better than the original film. If you have a choice, watch the recently release Richard Donner cut of this film instead.
It's far superior.
