Review of Superman: Doomsday (2007) by Brendan N — 09 Mar 2009
This was the first DC venture into direct-to-DVD movies in recent years and it was pretty much just okay, although nothing amazing. The animation style was something similar to the Superman animated series and yet the characters somehow look more gaunt with a much thinner Lex Luthor and a Clark Kent / Superman with some nasty jowls.
I guess what bothers me the most about it is the fact that Doomsday is a major, major villain to pull out of a hat given he does have the historial value of having defeated (and killed) Superman in the comics. To have him as some random villain always seems like a cop-out for me and this film pretty much embodies that.
Points for trying to treat this as a more "adult" venture but clearly DC has a long way to go in terms of these things.
