Review of Superman: Doomsday (2007) by Lilly F — 19 Jul 2008
Now I never really read too much Superman. I didn't care for a big blue boyscout with ambiguously omnipotent powers, but I do own the Death Of Superman. Wasn't Superman: Doomsday suppose to be the animated version of the Death of Superman? Let's dive right in shall we? In the beginning Doomsday is introduced that's about where the plot sees a butterfly, takes a hard left turn, and sits down in an auditorium where Kevin Smith is giving a speech to college students.
That's right, I'm sure I'm not the only person in the world who saw it, mechanical spiders, Superman walking places, no cape, a robot sidekick? The whole story was ripped from a pitch Kevin Smith rejected in An Evening With Kevin Smith.
Lame. (Look, I can do it too.) If you listen hard enough, during the movie Kevin Smith was given a role where he criticized the events unfolding. I don't know how to feel about that. I honestly don't.
I had several moments where I realized this movie will NEVER air on Cartoon Network. It featured stronger language and violence then the Saturday Morning show it spun from. I'm super OK with that, but parents be warned.
I really had a hard time with the acting, and the clone concept (it's dead and tired.... let's try originality.) I had issues with Lois's sleuthing. Really? It took her all of two seconds to become suspicious of Martha Kent? She WORKED with Clark for how many years? Dumbest journalist ever.
The ending was appalling. The answer to how do we kill Superman? A gun?! Shame on you writers... shame.. Superman should never use a gun, I don't care what he's shooting with, how weak he is, anything, this is sloppy and LAZY writing.
Let's get to the good part. Lex Luther. James Marsters introduced me to a side of crazy I was not sure I wanted, but once I was there I could not get enough. Lex not getting to off the blue boy himself sets him on a wild, obsessive, sadistic whirl that made you uncomfortable and completely engrossed.
It was not the reaction anyone was expecting. I liked it a lot. The movie itself was merely OK. If you like Superman, I don't suggest owning it. See it, don't own it. If you're not really into superman or the comic genre pass it completely.
If you liked An Evening With Kevin Smith these should probably shelfed next to each other. AND if you're the type that KNOWS Kevin Smith is God (even through Gigli)... well I guess I can't convince you to do anything.
.. (I do appreciate Kevin Smith, but currently my religious beliefs side on pools with jello! See profile.).
