The film is truly amazing. It has a special quality to it and Helen Slater is great. As are the supporting cast, especially an OTT Faye Dunaway. The story could have been executed better and the much talked about Christopher Reeve cameo would have helped too.
Aside from all that, it's tremendous fun.
