Review of Supergirl (1984) by Thomas P — 20 Oct 2007
Not knowing many that have seen this camp classic, I can safely say that this is enjoyable fluff that all should sample. Taking some of the dreamy aura from the 'Superman' franchise, Helen Slater makes a surpisingly effective Kara / Linda Lee.
Her innocence and curisoty rivals that of Brad Pitt in 'Meet Joe Black' in the cutesy stakes. And Faye Dunaway as the evilish woman is superb, ably supported by the late and camp Peters Cook & O'Toole.
Hart Bochner is a lovely hunk of a man, and the otherworldly beautiful love theme is one of Jerry Goldsmith's most impressive. The FX are first-rate for the time and although the set-pieces aren't all that, the school uniforms and cameos are.
For true spine-tingling cinema, visit the scene where Lois Lane's niece points to a poster of Superman to the merging of Goldsmith and Williams' unstoppable scores...
