Review of Supergirl (1984) by Benjamin E — 08 Feb 2010
This is the last of the super movies that the Salkynds made. After this they sold the rights to the franchise to Golan/Globus.
They obviously tried to recapture the glory of the first Superman movie with this one, but it fell way short.
Christopher Reeves was at one point suppose to have a substantial role in this as Superman, but backed out. Now, we only see a poster of him and a radio announcer stating that Superman is on peace mission to a distant galaxy. Where was that Superman movie?
A huge supporting cast was here, just like Superman. Faye Dunaway, Brenda Vaccaro, Mia farrow, Peter O'Toole, Peter Cook, Hart Bochner, & Marc McClure playing Jimmy Olson.
Argo City has survived the destruction of Krypton. Zaltar has used the omegahedron for artistic purposes. When it is lost, Kara sets forth to find it in our world. While there, she is transformed into Supergirl.
She must face great evil in this strange new world.
The story is a little lacking, but who ever thought they'd see a Supergirl movie? It is sub-par, but it is kind of refreshing.
Interesting sidenote, Helen Slater went on to play Clark Kents mom, Lara on Smallville. She acted with Laura Vandervoort, who plays the new Supergirl! She has also voiced Talia on batman The Animated Series. Hart Bochner was the voice of City Councilman Arthur Reeves in Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. Marc McClure was Dax-Ur on season eight of Smallville. Jeannot Szwarc has gone on to direct twelve episodes of Smallville.
So, a fun movie, but not a lot of substance.
