Review of Superbad (2007) by Andrew M — 27 Apr 2016
Superbad is misleading in the best way possible. Hidden beneath the crazy drunken antics of this movie is a surprisingly beautiful coming-of-age story with an unbelievable amount of heart. The chemistry between Jonah Hill and Michael Cera really sells their relationship and their struggles with social anxiety and moving on from high school to college.
Even in spite of their social awkwardness, there's a lot of relatability to be had in these two characters. And, of course, the hijinks they get into throughout the course of the one night the film covers are undeniably hysterical.
These come mostly thanks to interactions with two cops (played by Seth Rogen and Bill Hader) that also come in contact with Christopher Mintz-Plasse's McLovin' (who is one of the most memorable comedy characters in recent memory).
Writing duo Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have jam packed so many jokes and hilarious situations into their screenplay, and the result is endlessly entertaining. Director Greg Mottola has created a gut-busting comedy that is simultaneously one of the finest coming-of-age movies of its decade.
