Review of Super Troopers (2001) by James R — 22 Apr 2018
I know I'm gonna catch flak for this, but man Super Troopers has just not aged that well. Maybe, it's because I had seen this film countless times in the mid-2000's, but man it just doesn't hit like it use to.
Super Troopers follows a group of Highway Patrol Officers who are from Vermont, love syrup and play a lot of practical jokes. I'm not Highway Patrol Man, but I'm gonna go on a limb here and say these guys aren't the role model types of what this profession is all about.
We have the veteran Thorny (Jay Chandrasekhar) who's kinda the leader of the group, Mac (Steve Lemme) the loose cannon, Foster (Paul Soter) a goofball too who's secretly seeing a local cop, Rabbit (Erik Stolhanske) who's the rookie and then finally Farva (Kevin Heffernan) who was suspended recently and is working the phones and who is also a complete jackass and no one likes.
The Captain O'Hagan (Brian Cox) announces that the station will be closing down due to a lack of state funding the guys get together to work hard...kinda and uncover a drug operation going on under their very noses.
The movie has some great moments here. Trust me meow. It has some classic scenes, but I gotta say there's a ton of filler here where the story drags on just a bit too long. The movie clocks in at an hour and 43 minutes and I think it would have benefitted by being 10-15 minutes shorter.
The laughs would come in more consistent as well. The story is over the top which it's suppose to be and for the most part I still chuckled a bit. It's dated though in the sense that this is very much the Broken Lizard crews first big film.
They definitely show they work together well and are funny, but the presentation here (which I think was fully realized by Beerfest (2006) is lacking. An older comedy that doesn't quite do it for me anymore, but worth a watch for anyone who wants to catch the sequel and never saw the original.
