Review of Super Size Me (2004) by Sean N — 21 Sep 2010
This may be one of the only movies I know of that could steer anyone away from eating fast food. Even though it is just a documentary, the film is pretty darn funny. It truly shows how eating fast food can affect you.
The film takes place on the heels of lawsuits against McDonald's by two teenage girls who became incredibly obese because they ate McDonald's pretty much every day. In lieu of this, filmmaker Morgan Spurlock decides to an experiment to see if eating fast food is harmful to your health. He has to have 3 meals a day, eat every single item on the menu at least once, eat only McDonald's food, and must only SuperSize the meal if he is asked.
Like all documentaries, the film talks about things like how obesity has been such an epidemic, how Fast Food restaurants added more meal sizes, and how they promote their stuff to kids. Before I say anything, I think that overall I'm kind of supporting McDonald's. I understand the reasons for suing them because fast food isn't good for you, but it's common knowledge that you shouldn't eat the food every single day. But, I do think that McDonald's did go a bit overboard with the Super Size meal. Looking at the Super Size meal now, I probably wouldn't even finish it.
Definitely have to give Spurlock a lot of credit for doing something like this. Even though it is a gross thing to watch, it is pretty fun to watch.
