Review of Super Size Me (2004) by Sebastian O — 17 Mar 2014
The documentary "Supersize me" was directed and starred by Morgan Spurlock. In this documentary he wants to prove that eating McDonalds will make you obese and many other disadvantages . So he went to a 30 day diet, which he only eats food sold by McDonalds. In the documentary he also includes some nutritionist to help him checking his health during the diet.
During this experiment he had some specific rules, like no food other than what McDonald sold, including mineral water. He must eat at least 3 times a day all at McDonalds, He must supersize his meal if offered ( which he said to be only 5 times), and he will attempt to walk like average american ( 5000 steps a day). After this diet he gained 24.5 lbs, had a cholesterol of 230 ,some fat accumulated on his liver and claimed to have a mood swing and sexual problems. It took him 14 months to lose the weight he gained, using vegan diet.
During his diet, Spurlock claimed that he consumed about 5000 calories a day which according to his nutritionists, his daily need of calories are 2500. As entertaining as Supersize Me is, I personally think that this movie is biased in a way because he is on caloric surplus and he purposely exercise less. It tries to prove that McDonald's food will make you fat, but in the other hand he is stuffing his mouth until he is in 2500 caloric surplus.
Every normal person would know that anyone with that much caloric surplus would gain tons of weight if done every day for the whole month. This movie just shows that eating ridiculous amount of McDonalds will make you obese which have nothing to do with McDonalds, because it's not their fault for serving fast food that people wants. In fact, if you stand in front of McDonalds for 3 hours straight, no one forces you to go inside and stuff their junk food up your mouth.
If I eat only vegetables and healthy foods but I'm in 2500 caloric surplus and gained some pounds, does it proof that vegetables makes you fat? no. Same applies to this movie.
Eventhough this movie is entertaining and informative, it is biased and not fully factual, which makes the movie "supersize me" looks stupid in the end of the day and people just take it as comedy.
