Review of Super Mario Bros. (1993) by Reviews F — 25 May 2018
Super Mario Bros. is incredibly unfaithful to its source material. While the movie was released at a time when video games never had much of a story to begin with and the games themselves had a bizarre premise, fans of Nintendo's hit games were expecting a cool action movie at the least.
Not Blade Runner for kids. The sets are okay, some of the special effects and animatronics aren't that bad despite Yoshi looking like a Jurassic Park character reject. Dennis Hopper seems to be having the time of his life playing King Koopa.
Did the writers of Austin Powers use this movie for reference when they were creating Dr. Evil? I had a laugh every now and then. Yet the movie has more problems than being an in-name-only adaptation of the games.
While it's called Super Mario BROTHERS, way too much of the focus is on Luigi. Mario is just sort of a sidekick in his own movie. Mario and Luigi barely look like their video game counterparts even when they change into plumber attire.
To be fair, Daisy was only called Daisy instead of Peach because her name in the games at the time was Toadstool. And hey, at least Luigi+Daisy is canon. This movie is bad but..unpopular opinion incoming: I think this movie, much like Shigeru Miyamoto, is better than the obscure anime.
Not because of source material fidelity but rather because of how it was way too weird with an incredibly corny fandub on YouTube. Think Illumination will be able to do a better Mario Bros. movie than Disney in disguise here?
