Review of Super Mario Bros. (1993) by Shane S — 05 Jan 2011
It's a really strange video game adaptation that, on the bright side, shows us what a more to-the-point version of alternate 1985 from "Back to the Future, Pt. II" would be if Zemeckis did anything, an enjoyably campy performance from master of ceremonies Dennis Hopper, and something that, despite some contrary opinions, is a somewhat faithful adaptation of the Mario games (Mario and recolor Mario save a princess from some dragon). And I mean somewhat.
Yeah, because at a lot during this film, it gets really cheesy. You know, that '90s humor you embraced in the Wayne's World and Bill & Ted films - they use it a lot. They also reference the slide from the Goonies and all sorts of things. And Toad's a busker now - and a Goomba. Because a character who doesn't exist in the games is shunned for Mushroom Head.
This is what Damo Suzuki sees in his sleep. Now, I feel compelled to make 18-minute jam sessions.
