Review of Super Mario Bros. (1993) by Tanner S — 16 Oct 2016
In the early 90s, Hollywood saw the potential in video games, and began adapting them into feature length movies. The first of these was the 1993 film adaptation of quite possibly the most iconic video game of all time - Super Mario Bros.
The film was advertised heavily, especially in gaming magazines such as Nintendo Power, but unfortunately, the film was a massive box office flop, and received a negative reception from critics and even fans of the games.
Despite its initial failure, the movie received a cult following over the years from several who either consider it a guilty pleasure or a legitimately underrated movie.
Now while this is not a good movie, I actually quite enjoy it, and it's not as awful as some make it out to be.
It has problems, sure. The script and tone are chaotic and all over the place, and the acting is pretty laughable, but it at least has some flashy visuals, plus, Bob Hoskins is enjoyable as Mario, despite later admitting he hated working on the film (the production behind the film was a nightmare, but that's another story for another day).
This is by no means the worst video game movie...it's pretty close, but I think Uwe Boll's adaptations like House of the Dead and Alone in the Dark are far FAR worse.
