Review of Super Mario Bros. (1993) by Erin W — 28 Sep 2013
A very poor adaptation of one of the best video game franchises. It is definitely "loosely" based on the games and it differs from them a lot because Mario and Luigi are not twins; Peach is called Daisy; Bowser is a human being rather than a monstrous carnivore; the Goombas differ completely from the ones in the games and look extremely hideous; poor Yoshi has been turned from a very cute animated dinosaur to a "real" one; the Mushroom Kingdom has been omitted; and Mario and Luigi don't wear their famous overalls until near to the end.
The worst part(s) of the film was when we see human babies being hatched in "human-sized" eggs (GROSS!). Even though the film is not very good, there are some things that I do enjoy about it like seeing a few game elements (e.
G. Bob-ombs, Bullet Bills), and Mario and Luigi living in Brooklyn and working as plumbers. It was a good idea for them to do a film adaptation of the Super Mario franchise, but it would've been better if it was animated (either 2D or CGI) and more true to the games.
