Review of Super Fuzz (1980) by Meri G — 20 Oct 2007
Ah Super Fuzz. I adored this movie as a child. I can only imagine that I found the lead, Terence Hill, irresistable. He was so handsome, so funny- and that accent- like an Italian raised by a pack of wild Germans. I don't know how many have actually seen this movie- I personally think that Super Fuzz Haunts the psyche of every young American. Even if you haven't seen it somehow you can believe that you have. I used to force my parents to watch it over over- I think they must have hated it. So when I stumbled upon it at a second hand bookstore for only $3 I knew the Fates wanted me to have it.
So upon rewatching I was absolutely shocked to discover that it was actually better than I remembered- granted I fell asleep during the all important final scene where our hero Officer Speed breaks out of Prison- where he was being wrongly held (he had been accused of killing his partner- played by Ernest Borgnine). He manages to rescue Ernest who has frozen underwater in some sort of submarine (you will have to forgive me for at this point I am drawing upon childhood memories and the visual image of Ernest Borgnine staring out a porthole, covered in frost still sends shivers down my spine and bile up my esophagus. Somehow Officer Speed (aka Super Fuzz) uses orange bubble gum to float Ernest Borgnine out of the water. To this day I am revolted by even the mere thought of orange bubble gum. I think that perhaps I will ask my sister if I can watch this movie with my nephew. Something this terrible and wonderful should be shared with younger generations of impressionable youth.
