Review of Super Fly (1972) by Nikolai E — 12 Feb 2008
A solid entry in the pantheon of early blaxploitation. Better than Shaft, but falls short of Sweet Sweetback, although it's far more watchable. Unlike Shaft, there's no pandering here. Superfly is an unrepentant drug dealer who wants to get out of the game to enjoy his wealth, and for a shocking twist, actually succeeds.
It's exploitation cinema without a doubt, but at the risk of damning with faint praise, it's more sophisticated than most of its imitators.
