Review of Super Fly (1972) by Adam P — 23 Feb 2008
This largely one-sided celebration of capitalism, money, and coke (except Mayfield's music) makes mention of pushing being "the only game the Man left us to play", but never really finds enough time to explore the complexities and contradictions it raises with its "sell 30 keys and get out for good" plot.
Priest never really develops or grows as a character--making the film feel akin to Scarface without the last hour. Still...the film's politics are a worthy right-wing addition to the pro-Black dialogue that would be given it's socialist voice in films like Coffy a year later.
