Review of Super Dark Times (2017) by Hannah-Leigh W — 02 Jan 2018
I think Kevin Phillips does a remarkable job here in honing tone and atmosphere to draw you into this dark world. Bolstered by some exceptional performances from a very young cast -- and these are made better thanks to believable dialogue and great camerawork -- Super Dark Times is a dark (redundant, I know), slow-burn psychological thriller.
There are themes of guilt and power here, but also deeper themes suggested, especially when we realize that Zach is not as paranoid as everyone thinks he is. I like, however, that they left the audience to wonder the question of: why? Clues are left, but just enough for there to be debate the actions and consequences of these characters' actions.
It's an effective thriller and a great 90's flick with some of the best young performances this year. I think it's a great watch.
