Review of Super 8 (2011) by G S — 11 Feb 2013
Without revealing too much, I'll say that this movie's driving force was a group of kids out to solve a mystery. Just like when we were kids, and we wished we could be apart of something thrilling, dangerous, and not-of-this-world.
Movies like E.T., Goonies, and Stand By Me are the main influences Super 8 draws from. In this regard, Super 8 rocked my tits off. There are dozens of great moments and dialogue between these youngin's that I felt like one of them all over again; this was Abrams' main goal and he nailed it.
What wasn't his main goal was an ending. Unfortunately, the finale feels rushed and unsatisfying but the ride was incredible. I absolutely recommend seeing this on the big screen because the action, sound, and suspense are fucking awesomesauce.
However, don't expect the most well rounded plot. Super 8 suffers from a disjointed script that tries to do too much between being a monster movie and a touching family film. Abrams is no Spielberg but I love the effort.
