It may be trying to evoke ET, but it doesn't work for me. It takes too long to explain what is going on, and then when it does it largely destroys the chemistry that was building among the young filmmakers.
It tries to be too many stories, and really succeeds at none of them. There is plenty of action, so I guess if that is your sole interest the movie probably won't disappoint too much.
For me, just pick a story, friendship, coming of age, love, family, single parenting...and build it. Just too many stories, and not enough story. Plus the action just doesn't make much sense either. JJ Abrams should just stick to TV.
