Review of Super 8 (2011) by Riff J — 24 Dec 2015
A group of children set out to create a film to enter for a competition but instead stumble across a train crash, after which strange events start occurring in the town.
The crash is no accident and the mystery which develops for the first two-thirds surrounding it is well played. Spielberg's view of childhood is visible despite only being the producer but I had little sense of connection with our 'visitor' despite J.J. Abrams borrowing heavily from E.T. The final act was rushed and the last scene with locket was a little too on-the-nose.
Super 8 contains what is one of the best train crashes I've ever seen on screen. It also has the occasional funny line. There are the makings of a great film in there somewhere but it just does not quite work.
