Review of Super (2010) by Zak S — 21 Sep 2013
Takes some chances and goes to some really dark places. A bit too much gratuitousness for me. It really pushes the boundaries, and sometimes it steps over the line it's toeing. Mad respect for swinging away though because a lot of it works quite well.
The characters are all fucked up, which is wonderful. It gives the characters a sense of depth, even if we don't get too far below the surface with most of them. Rainn Wilson's character is interesting.
He's a highly active protagonist who is also highly susceptible to influence. So many instances where external pressures dictate his actions, even if he doesn't realize it. Haven't seen much of that.
Works well. His dramatic scenes early on aren't the most believable, but I feel like they got better as the film progressed. Ellen Page is great. Always enjoy Bacon of the Kevin variety. Some of the movie's more overt attempts at humor didn't work for me at all.
Final verdict: A bit of treasure buried in a rough outer shell. [3/5 STARS] [092213].
