Review of Super (2010) by Paul C — 30 Jun 2013
What at first appears to be a cross between "Kick-Ass" and "God Bless America" ends up being its own film and is, in a word, fantastic. (You thought I was going to say "Super", didn't you?) "Super" is a very dark, very funny, very violent portrait of a couple of seriously disturbed individuals.
It reminds me of some Korean films in that the tone can change drastically in short order, with the abrupt shifts in tone helping to drive home the emotional impact of the scenes. Rainn Wilson heads a great cast and shows he has the chops to bring the emotional depth needed to his character.
There is more to this than just a goofy "schlep as powerless superhero" comedy. This is good stuff.
