Review of Super (2010) by Aaron S — 19 Jul 2013
I really like this movie. I even prefer it to Kick-Ass (I think).
The story is not all that mind-blowing, weird guy's wife leaves him and he starts beatin' the shit out of people with a wrench, but there's nothing superfluous about it. It's simple, and refreshing in it's simplicity. Basically, this happens, witch inspires him to do this, which causes this, then he has to do this.
The writing is just great, and I laughed out loud during almost every scene. Rainn Wilson's deadpan, awkward delivery have always impressed me, but he's on top form here. There were even moments where I was laughing, and knew I shouldn't, which made it even more funny.
The performances are all great too. As I said, Rainn Wilson was good, and I've yet to not like him in anything. Liv Tyler got almost nothing to do, and I found it hard to accept gentle, soft-spoken Liv Tyler as this character. Kevin Bacon was the regular Kevin Bacon sleazeball, a roll he's done so many times and been so good at. He is very funny in this, talking about brown eggs and touching cars. The stand-put is Ellen Page, though. Her character is quirky when we first meet her,but in an endearing way and not annoying (cough cough Zoey Deschanel). After a while we find out that she is more than quirky (she's utterly bat-shit). The chemistry between her and Wilson is great, and the sight of the two of them standing beside each other is priceless.
The ending was not quite to my taste, though it didn't ruin it.
Gunn shows great talent in the films I've seen of his, and I'm eagerly waiting to see what he does with Guardians of the Galaxy.
