Review of Super (2010) by Danniela S — 02 Oct 2013
If you watched Kick Ass and thought to yourself, "I liked it, but could that idea get an stranger?" Well here is your answer then. Super is another superhero movie that picks up the masked vigilante theme that Kick Ass did.
With this though you get some odd imagery and more jokes on society and some superhero references. At points there are some good things to dive into like how fighting crime like our main hero does could actually be a bad thing just like how the people he is beating up is doing.
Then we get some funny scenes with him starting out as a hero, but failing and then finding his way by doing research. His sidekick played by Ellen Page is pretty much Hit Girl if she was just messed up.
Hit Girl was a trained assassin, but Bolty here just gets off being a hero who fights crime. I will say though there is a lot of the film that should have been cut out which does bog it down a whole lot.
Sometimes the odd imagery is just wasting the time and could have been skipped. I mean tentacle hentai is shown for no reason whatsoever. Along with that the film tries to add too much darkness and it's not needed at some points.
For the villains it works well because we are supposed to hate them, but in the third act they really pull off a fast twist that really losses impact mostly because of a scene before it. Overall, if you love Kick Ass you will probably have some fun with this film even if they have some sexual moments and odd moments that were not needed at all.
