Review of Suntan (2016) by Grant G — 13 Jun 2017
Masterpiece. This is one of those films you can watch when you are younger in your 20s or early 30s. But you truly won't understand it till you are older and lived both of these lives this movie depicts.
Couple of scenes which really hit home. First one was in the doctors office when we first encounter Anna. All of her friends can't calm down and act the age of people who all are around 21 years of age. They are grabbing stuff and not taking basic direction acting like fools, not setting down. Seriously they were acting like Middle Schoolers when the Sub teacher is in for the day.
By the end of the movie those same obnoxious free spirited kids who couldn't calm the F down are now telling Kostis to act his age and settle down. hahahahaha I was beyond furious at those kids by their double standard. I was actually rooting for Kostis go completely postal on them to teach them a lesson.
During the film you realized how important this film is at examining youth and youth values. Youth don't give a rip about anything except youth. They could care less that this man went to medical school and is a doctor. They still look down at him because he is a bit overweight and old. LOL They really prove to be vapid shallow shells of human beings who just are extremely good looking. And they coast on this. Proving in their minds that is all that matters in order for social acceptance.
I think the thing that really made me laugh was I knew each and every one of these youthful characters in real life, by people I have encountered in my own life. And in real life when those looks started to slip by age, you really see how boring and superficial these kids were. At least Kostis is a doctor. He accomplished more than these kids most likely ever will. But like I said they could care less unless he was young and a hard body.
I thought the ending was on point. Even when Kostis is sitting there and then realized how far off the rails he really did go. He then realizes he is a doctor and he needs to step up and do his role in life.
Maybe you or I have never slipped up as bad as Kostis does in this movie. But every old person has that Kostis moment where they realize they aren't a kid anymore and to stop screwing around. At least I know I have.
