Review of Sunshine Cleaning (2008) by Jeff A — 21 Jun 2011
Netflix has been pushing this one on me ever since it came out. Like with so many other movies, Netflix says I'd give it a high rating. It took an expiration date on instant view to force me to watch it. And I kinda dug it.
Sunshine Cleaning is dark comedy about a dysfunctional family coping with death. Two sisters, with unresolved emotional issues concerning their mother's suicide, start a crime scene cleaning business. They must face death everyday while holding on to the tragic events of their past. Through this cleaning business they clean up their own mess by finding resolution and restoring relationships with one another.
I really love the premise and Amy Adams is enjoyable to watch as always. It's not laugh out loud funny, but I don't think it was meant to be. The humor is subtle and never forced. For such a bleak topic, Sunshine Cleaning manages to keep you entertained.
Maybe I should watch more Netflix recommendations.
