Review of Sunshine (2013) by Kyle B — 03 Jan 2012
Danny Boyle now proves he is a man of many faces. The man who brought us Trainspotting and 28 Days Later returns with a not so futuristic tale of survival on board a space craft pointed towards the sun, trying to revive the dying star.
Not since the first Alien, have I felt such isolation and fear in a film, along with a cast of great actors who all portray unique individuals whose jobs vary on board the Icarus II. The film is nearly flawless in its storytelling and visual intrigue.
Although this film looks like mission to mars or Red Planet, it reaches far beyond generic sci-fi action, and into the arena of genuine drama and fantastic character interaction that can only be the result of fantastic screenplay writing and excellent directing.
Some reviews on here mention the last 20 minutes, which adds a subplot that some may say takes away from the overall feel of the film, but I must disagree and say the twist in the last 20 minutes only adds to the idea of humanity and its place within the greater scheme of things.
I missed this film when it had its short theatrical run, but picked it up immediately this week, and was far from disappointed. A major recommendation for anyone who enjoys Danny Boyle and/or a fantastic Sci-Fi thriller.
