Review of Sunshine (2013) by Kaywen A — 03 May 2012
I started this movie with low expectations, looking for a sci-fi action flick. When the movie was done, it had nearly brought me to tears twice and stamped itself firmly near the summit of my 'top ten movies of all time' list. An extremely intelligent, deeply philosophical, and eerily quiet story of eight astronauts sent to save everything, the tension comes from brilliant pacing and legitimate problems that would be faced with such a mission, rather than from non-stop action and flashy CGI. The last quarter or so of the movie is a sharp turn away from what had come before, and while many viewed the sudden shift as a deal-breaker, I appreciated the change in tone, as well as the sudden shock of a new element in play.
One of my very favorite movies; defeated only by Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Adjustment Bureau, Inception, and Source Code.
