Review of Sunshine (2013) by Parker M — 23 Sep 2012
Danny Boyle is the master of combining action with drama. He always finds that balance. 28 Days Later (my 4th favourite film of the decade) brilliantly combined action with drama and had themes on human fragility which was quite effective. Sunshine has these exact themes but with a different plot. The idea is similar however: a few people are on a mission to find an answer that could save humanity. Sunshine is both beautiful and terrifying. Boyle uses sunlight as a character: it has benevolent and treacherous qualities; it is radiant and perfect. Sunshine, however, deals with fallible human characters and how nothing ever seems to go their way. Some of these human characters are played by Cillian Murphy, Rose Byrne, and Chris Evans who are all impressive as people just trying to survive while also trying to complete this mission that has been going on for years. Here comes Sunshines only flaw: it may be the intensely advanced technology that is present in the film, but how the ship manages to near the sun in a matter of years is absurd, considering the sun is 150 million kilometers from Earth. But Sunshine has striking originality, mesmerizing special effects and filmmaking, and a conclusion that ties beauty in with disaster. Sunshine is painfully underrated and though some may find issues with its ending (SPOILER a long chase sequence that incessantly goes on--END SPOILER) Boyle's talented direction and top notch performances is enough to go see a film that captivates on a journey in reaching the universe's biggest star.
I SAY-See it.
