Review of Sunshine (2013) by Ben F — 26 Nov 2012
A beautifully made sci-fi film that emphasises fiction over science. Taken literally it isn't plausible, but in a genre where people accept lightsabers and tractor beams, why does everyone whinge?
The idea that total light is so much more than the sensory deprivation of total darkness captivated me - I felt the ship's psychiatrist was a fascinating character, just rightly pitched.
I loved the EVA to fix the shield but for me the stand out scene is when they first enter Icarus 1. As the torch light flashes past the camera, there are several still frames of the crew photo from that ship. A spooky touch that reminded me why Danny Boyle is one of the finest UK directors of modern times.
I enjoyed this film so much I bought it on blu-ray as I wanted a pristine transfer.
