Review of Sunshine (2013) by A H — 10 May 2013
Ummm, Wow. OK. Not quite sure what to say about this one. At first, this space-faring adventure looks like it will be a more psychologically-focused flick in the vein of Solaris, showing the mental and emotional effects of a deep space mission, the stakes nothing less that the survival of the entirety of humanity and how that could weigh on a man's mind and ability. The eye-motif is heavy here - being the window to soul and all...
And then, the plot mechanics take over and the wheels just fly off and it becomes a big dose of "WTF?" The surreal aspects just don't mesh with the standard suspense notes and it all falls apart. That said, this is an unbelievably beautiful movie - Boyle really gets to show off what he can do with a pretty substantial budget (for him). It just feels that he couldn't fully meld the headier aspects to the more action-y notes.
Ultimately, it's a beautiful failure...and yet one I kind of want to watch again.
