Review of Sunshine (2013) by Tim W — 21 May 2013
Slow-burning and claustrophobic, 'Sunshine' is an intelligent sci-fi thriller that reveals itself slowly, a palpable sense of tension and dread building with each scene. As the mission---Earth's last hope to restart the dying sun and save humanity---begins to unravel, so too does the crew.
In fact, much of the first half of the film is spent in desolate reflection, the early optimism of the voyage long faded; replaced by a nagging sense of fear, futility and doubt. Despite the dire subject matter, a faint sense of hope pervades even the darkest moments.
With 'Sunshine', Boyle once again proves himself as a director of unique versatility. A future sci-fi classic? Only time will tell.
