Review of Sunshine (2007) by Socsy T — 05 Oct 2011
I remember watching this film a few years ago but for some reason never paid much attention to it. maybe because it was just one of many movies I saw during one of my movie marathon weekends. but I do remember thinking that it had a great cast and a pretty intriguing plot that asks the question, what would you be willing to do to save mankind and its dying sun? I saw it again today but this time it had my full attention, and I must say that danny boyle did a pretty good job.
it's not his best work obviously, but it's good enough. the cast is awesome, cillian murphy, michelle yeoh, sanada hiroyuki, cliff curtis, rose byrne and chris evans brought to life a group of brilliant scientists out on a mission to create a star that would become the earth's new sun.
the mission was going smoothly until the crew was forced to change their trajectory and that's when things started to fall apart. I fell in love with the heroism and principles shown by their captain played by the versatile sanada hiroyuki.
but chris evans surprised me the most as mace. he first struck me as a cruel and cold asshole who just didn't give a damn about anyone or anything save for his own ass, but it turned out he was the most selfless among them all.
he did what he did for the sake of the mission and he was willing to sacrifice everything, even his life to complete it. the end part of the movie reminded me somewhat of event horizon when it went on psychological thriller mode, but I still enjoyed it.
to me the movie ended as it should. the mission was completed but not without lives sacrificed and lost.
