Review of Sunshine (2007) by Sari P — 07 Oct 2011
Originally watching this film for it's main song (yes, kinda pathetic) "Surface of the Sun," I was not disappointed to constantly hear the emotionally-charged techno-beats of its famous theme. But what of the movie? It is a movie that truly deserves the song, and perhaps even vice versa. Here we have an ensemble of talented professionals who act stoically, which is appropriate as it helps convince us that they are truly astronauts. The predictable part of the slowly unhinging crew is played by each of the actors convincingly and even quite hauntingly. It goes beyond the familiar universe of typical science fiction films as it raises philosophical questions that, indeed, allows the viewers to start thinking Sun-sized. Towards the end, horror and desolation reigns the empty corridors of Icarus II, and proved to be thrillingly good even in the "mystery" department.
As we slowly approach the Sun, the beauty of its low budget special effects perhaps even trumps the mindless action of "Transformers," because here we understand what we see, here we are given time to appreciate the beauty. Overall, "Sunshine" made me look at the Sun differently. Mind-blowing is an understatement.
"If you wake up one morning and it's a particularly beautiful day, you'll know we made it.".
