Review of Sunshine (2007) by Mrs. M — 27 Nov 2011
The first time I saw this film I absolutely hated it but I recently watched it a few years after my initial viewing and I can honestly say that I have never made such an about turn a film,i absolutely loved it on my second viewing of it.
Directed by the great Danny Boyle this is an intelligent, existential sci-fi thriller that may not be to the liking of those expecting a kinetic, action based sci-fi movie but for those who are looking for something smarter and deeper than the usual sci-fi fare then this is for them.
The film is a cracking space set thriller that revolves around themes such as mortality and throws up some interesting moral dilemmas as well. The cast are all excellent, delivering quality work with Chris Evans giving the best performance of his career to date.
Boyle's direction is magnificent and the visuals and camerawork are stunning.John Murphy and Underworld's wonderful deserves a special mention too.Alex Garland's script is for the most part very good.
Mostly I say though as him and Boyle make a slight misstep in the third act bringing in an element to the story that there was no need for.Still though, this doesn't detract greatly from what is one of the best sci-fi movies of recent years and one of Boyle's best films to date.
Highly recommended.
