Review of Sunshine (2007) by Andres O — 21 Feb 2013
"Sunshine" is a truly unique and inspired Science Fiction film with some genuine drama, spectacle, tension and even a bit of terror. The characters are unique and likeable and you will get emotionally involved as the plot develop because on top of the entire world depending on this crew of people, you can also relate to them because they feel like more than just crew members.
They also have their hobbies, they have pride in their work and different characters believe in their mission for different reasons. A unique element that really works cinematically in the film is the use of light.
This is one of the few films where it's not the darkness that creates chills, but the light. As the ship moves closer and closer to the sun, the darkness becomes a place to hide and because the sun is so blindingly bright it actually prevents people from seeing what they are doing.
There are shots where you really get to see how enormous the sun is, and yet how small it is compared to the rest of space. There are numerous shots of the ship as it flies through our solar system and on a big screen it's quite a sight to see.
The unique takes and uses of light on their own are enough to recommend the film, but with some really great scenes and some very cool science fiction concepts, "Sunshine" is one of the best science fiction films to come out of the 2000's.
