Review of Sunshine (2007) by Dalton R — 14 Sep 2013
It's not necessarily a science-fiction movie so much as a philosophical exploration of our place in the universe, and the notion of God as a concept of physical might utterly incomprehensible in strength to humans that exists in nature. The sun is so unbelievably powerful, that it took literally everything humanity had to even hope to change it.
Then there's the realization that it isn't even all that big on a cosmic scale compared to other stars, and the tiniest little pinprick of light compared to the rest of the universe.
Sunshine isn't about spaceships, nuclear physics, or even space. It's about the nature of our existence, what we are, where we are, and that in the blink of an eye, despite our best efforts, we could be utterly snuffed out of existence. There is perhaps a nod to the coexistence of science and god through the ending scene, where there is a profoundly beautiful visualization of the connection between humanity's greatest effort and the natural might of the cosmos, bridged by the main character.
Despite the rather odd turn towards the horror genre at the end, there, I still absolutely loved it. Go into this movie prepared to consider your place in the universe and you will not leave disappointed.
