Elements of 2001, and a pretty good cast cannot save this potentially interesting premise from devolving into a predictable horror film. (Granted the sun would go red giant and most scientists think it would take a billion such devices to reignite it, but we'll ignore that since nearly all sci-fi is fantasy anyway.
).
