Review of Sunset Boulevard (1950) by Peter L — 30 May 2009
Not my favorite from Wilder, like how most people seem to feel, but certainly a classic in every sense of the word. William Holden gives what I would probably say is his best performance, and Gloria Swanson lives and breathes her role.
She's crazy, and a tad off the wall, all the while remaining grounded, and heartbreakingly honest. Stroheim also delivers an absolutely incredible performance, and perhaps the most honest in the entire film.
he is simple, and subtle, and as the film drags on his mystery unfolds into something beautiful, and more so tragic. He almosts represents everything that this film is trying to say.
