Review of Sunset Boulevard (1950) by Lyric B — 11 Dec 2009
This is my favorite movie of all time. The cinematography is amazing and the acting is spectacular, especially from Gloria Swanson. I think the thing I love most about this movie is the vernacular. The people in this movie speak very poetically, almost like Shakespeare meets an old detective radio program.
This is probably the best story I have ever seen put to film. It speaks so much about the human condition. Norma Desmond is such a dark character and she comes from such a dark place. This gives such a great look into Hollywood's dark side. The forgotten celebrity, the love triangles, the struggling artists, loan sharks, murder... it delves into the dark side of film.
It does, however, like any great movie include a character to act as a brilliant light in all of this darkness. Betty is a beautiful and good woman who is writing a screenplay with Joe. She begins to fall in love with him until she is confronted with Joe's dark reality.
The movie is fantastic and should be watched by all.
