Review of Sunset Boulevard (1950) by Doug C — 27 Nov 2010
"I am big! It's the pictures that got small." This is such an incredible film in so many ways. Another of Billy Wilder's great noirs, the film stars William Holden as a hack screenwriter who is trying to evade some repo men when he accidentally stumbles across the rundown mansion of faded silent film star Norma Desmond, played by Gloria Swanson, who hires him to edit a film script she has written to return her to her former glory.
Desperate for money, Holden takes the job, but he is soon enthralled by Desmond's tragic madness, obssession with her own past, and dream of a return to stardom. I love the dark humor that pervades this film despite its tragic themes, much like Hitchcock's subtle humor.
