Review of Sunset Boulevard (1950) by Holly Q — 15 Apr 2009
Although we now know that the original casting considerations of this movie didn't have Gloria Swanson or William Holden in the two roles, it's hard to imagine a more perfect pairing. What elevates this movie into the realm of genius is the casting of Erich Von Stroheim as Max and when you see him projecting Queen Kelly for Norma and Joe you realise he would have done exactly the same thing in real life for Gloria Swanson over 20 years earlier.
Touches such as CB DeMille playing himself only add weight to why this is of the greatest movies ever made.
