Review of Sunset Boulevard (1950) by Steven G — 08 Apr 2010
To tell the truth, I love Hollywood. Its stars, glamor, materialism, beauty, class, fantasy, and most of all for the real life drama that it can reveal. As in real life, love would not thrive well if it based on lies. The everlasting theme the triangle of Love, Power, and Deceit is the them of this classic movie. Hollywood does not need to look very far to get this theme.
Sunset Boulevard is about a struggling writer who happened to be "in favor" of an aging actress. The actress was big, even bigger than the cinema itself, but she's forgotten for her age and the progress in Hollywood. There are so many real great names in Hollywood featured on this movie. Unlike "Hollywoodland" which based on a true story, this movie is blurring the line between fiction and reality of the postwar Hollywood. In short, a Classic for any Hollywood cinema lover.
There are many movies, and one musical, that tried to follow this Classic, but none compared. Once again, I love Hollywood especially when it looks at itself with the most clear and critical mirror.
