Review of Sunrise (1985) by Joey L — 31 Jul 2009
Unabashedly romantic, sweepingly cinematic and lushly scored. Sunrise is a dream-like mix of suspense, drama and romantic comedy rolled into one. The language of the camera oozes with originality with amazing and innovative technical effects for its time.
George O'Brien and Janet Gaynor weave their audience through such a range of emotions with not one spoken word. The uniquely designed set helps set the tone for the fairy-tale-esque feel. And the music is perfect.
The Act II story may feel like it lags to some of today's audience (with a random interlude with a drunken pig), but overall, the tone of the love of the married couple keeps the film-viewer engaged through to the end.
I love the title too - Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans. Definitely a must-see for any film/film history enthusiast.
