...No wonder it's on most professional film critics' top 10 lists of the all-time best movies: it is simply the consummate masterpiece of expressionism, and no wonder - it was created by a German, lol.

As Roger Ebert says, it's frightening because of what goes on beneath the seemingly sentimental surface, and it's precisely that subliminal impact that reverberates throughout the ages, making the flick as timeless as a Chopin nocturne - simple, poignant (the cathedral scene will leave you gasping for air, literally) and so heartrendingly human that one had better applaud vigorously or forever hold his breath.
