Review of Summertime (1955) by Ricardo O — 20 Aug 2010
A lovely romantic vehicle for the great Katharine Hepburn who plays a tourist in the beautiful city of Venice who has falls in love with an Italian shopkeeper but like Lean's earlier romantic film, Brief Encounter, the relationship only lasts as long as her time visiting the city.
The film would have been rated higher if it was just a little bit shorter but Hepburn gives one of her best performances and the city of Venice is beautifully shot through David Lean's eyes. This was the last time Lean would make a small film and who's career would soon rise to such great heights with his epic spectacles "The Bridge On the River Kwai", "Lawrence Of Arabia" and "Doctor Zhivago".
Recommended viewing for fans of David Lean, especially those that enjoy his smaller scaled films such as Great Expectations, Oliver Twist and Brief Encounter. 8/10.
