Review of Summer Palace (2006) by Wu Y — 02 Aug 2007
A disturbing film on the impact of a repressive regime on private as much as political life. The characters refusal or inability to communicate is linked to the impossibility of free expression in public.
Also a love story in which the main character's fixation with a relationship she had at university during a heady period of political and sexual liberation prevents her from getting on with her life.
Complicated.
