Review of Summer of Sam (1999) by Naische F — 15 Jun 2008
Nice little movie from Spike Lee about the summer of 1977 in New York City from a serial killer to the electrical blackout of that year. The directing and acting is superb, heavily influenced from earlier Martin Scorcesse and classic 1970s pictures.
I was finding myself heavily reminded of scenes from 'Goodfellas', 'Taxi Driver' and 'Mean Streets' and some episodes of 'The Sopranos', especially as this was written by Michael Imperioli who played young Christopher on 'The Sopranos'.
Not really a big fan of Spike Lee, but I did enjoy this one. John Leguizamo puts in a fine Al Pacino performance. Adrian Brody is ok to watch this time a punk rocker who has to do other things to keep rocking! The legendary Ben Gazzara puts in a memorable part as a real heavy boss! Mira Sorvino is ok too and does a good Michelle Pffiffer performance from 'Scarface' in certain scenes.
Not to be taken seriously at all, good fun!
